A husband and wife take refuge from an approaching danger with only a few suitcases and their dog, retreating to an empty house in the middle of nowhere. There, they wait for news of their son, who has fled conscription with a group of friends. In an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, they struggle to preserve their sanity as news grows scarcer, violence creeps closer, and paranoia takes hold. They cannot decipher what is or isn’t real, and if they have made the house, they’re in a shelter or a tomb. Sajko returns to the themes of fear and uncertainty as the defining experiences of our age. The anxieties of the modern world, marked by wars, pandemics, climate crises, and disinformation, where fear has become commonplace, are rendered with striking clarity. Though the world of The Last Day of Peace leaves less and less room for optimism, hope still runs quietly through it.
