The short stories in the book cat man dog are thematically connected by the notions from the title. However, this is not a book about pets, about dogs and cats as lesser beings, and about men as higher masters whom dogs and cats serve in their idleness, weirdness, loneliness, emotional frustrations etc. As the manner in which the title itself is written suggests, there are three equal entities in these stories, their lives (and deaths, oh, deaths in particular!) are intertwined and co-dependent as in autonomous, insubordinate creatures. They create a common world, in which things both wondrous and ordinarily plausible happen, all thanks to magnificent artistry of short storytelling. Who knows, once everything is settled and sifted through a receptive sieve, will it not prove that the very basis of Jergović’s literature has always been indeed the very art of short story?
